CIVIL STATUS AND POPULATION BUREAU
Placed under the authority of a Bureau Head, the Civil Status and Population bureau is responsible for the following:
– Coordinate the work of Civil Status Secretaries
– Fill the Civil Status Registers
– Receive Civil Status petitions and table them
– Issue Civil Status Certificates (Marriages, Births and Deaths)
– Supervise control and sign Civil Status documents
– Assist the Registrar during marriage celebration
– Fill in the registers
– Prepare certificates and other civil Status documents for signature
– Issue certificates once they are signed
– Assist the Registrar and Clerk during marriage celebrations
– It establishes statistics in relations to birth, death, and marriages
– Participate in the definition of strategies and population orientation
– Advice and secure administrative and legal level
– Receive and inform the public
– Organize the follow-up of voters and elections
– Organize the census of the population
– Carryout regular and legal watch
– Access the population policy of the area
– Promote the service
– Supervise cemeteries

DOCUMENTS NEEDED TO ESTABLISH A MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE
* PUBLICATION OF MARRIAGE BANNS FILLED AT THE CIVIL STATUS REGISTRATION OFFICE ROOM 101 OR 102 (ONE MONTH) BEFORE THE MARRIAGE CAN BE SOLEMNIZED.
& PHOTOCOPIES OF BIRTH CERTIFICATES AND
IDENTITY CARDS OF THE COUPE WHICH IS USED TO
FILL THE MARRIAGE BANNS.
TEN (10) PASSPORT SIZE PHOTOS (HEADS JOINED WITH THE WOMAN ON THE LEFT) TO BE SUBMITTED AT MOST THREE (03) DAYS BEFORE THE MARRIAGE DAY.
* TWO WITNESSES (ONE FROM BOTH SIDES TO COME ALONG WITH PHOTOCOPIES OF THEIR IDENTITY CARDS ON THE DAY OF THE MARRIAGE).
& CONFIRMATION OF MARRIAGE DATE IS DONE ONE (01) WEEK AT THE CIVIL STATUS OFFICE (101 OR 102) BEFORE THE MARRIAGE DATE.
NOTE: IN CASE
YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR MARRIAGE DATE, DO WELL TO COME TO THE CIVIL STATUS OFFICE ONE WEEK (01) OR THREE (03) DAYS BEFORE THE MARRIAGE DATE.
NOTE: ALL COUPLES ARE EXPECTED TO COME TO THE COUNCIL ON THE MARRIAGE DAY AT 8:30AM FOR OTHER FORMALITIES. LATE COMING IS-TO BE AVOIDED
DOCUMENTS NEEDED TO ESTABLISH A BIRTH CERTIFICATE
Delivery attestation (from hospital, Chief or Quarter head)
Photocopy of parents National Identity Card, Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate or Passport).
*After the birth of the baby, parents have Ninety (90) days to come and establish the Birth Certificate in the Civil Status Registry (Buea Council – Room 101 and 102).
DOCUMENTS NEEDED FOR A RECOGNITION CERTIFICATE (out of wedlock)
Delivery Attestation (from hospital, Chief or Quarter head)
Photocopies of parents National Identity Cards
and Birth Certificates.
Two witnesses i.e. a mature person from both parents with photocopy of their National Identity Card.
Note: The Mother, Father, Baby and two witnesses are expected to come to the Council on Mondays or Wednesdays for the recognition to be done.
DOCUMENTS NEEDED TO ESTABLISH A CERTIFICATE OF CELIBACY (SINGLE STATUS)
An application addressed to the Lord Mayor
Photocopy of National Identity Card, Birth Certificate or Passport of the concern, where he/she will attest that he/she has never been married before, signed three (03) times and include phone number(s).
Photocopy of National Identity Cards of two (02) witnesses who knows you. They should attest on those photocopies that you have never been married and sign three times including their phone number(s).
REQUIREMENT FOR A DEATH CERTIFICATE
Death attestation from the hospital or traditional ruler
National Identity card of the deceased
Copy of National Identity card of the declarant
Copy of National identity cards of two witnesses.
