A BUEA RESIDENT FINED FOR LITTERING THE STREETS

Within the framework of the synergy to keep the City of Buea permanently Clean, and considering the ongoing measures put in place by some elites, the administration and the Buea Council, some inhabitants of the Buea Municipality still litter wastes indiscriminately in the city with impunity.

Today 19th of August, 2025, a denizen of Buea was caught by the Mayor of Buea Council disposing wastes at Santa Barbara Junction, in total violation of the municipal deliberation recently endorsed to curb the illegal dumping of wastes on public spaces.

The offender, identified as Mr Tamba Dieudonné, was caught in the act disposing wastes from his vehicle a Suzuki K-truck matriculated Chassis No. 182954.  The vehicle was later impounded at the Buea Council Chambers. The act comes, on the heels of a Municipal Deliberation which was endorsed by Councillors in an enlarged meeting bearing on the fines on the indiscriminate disposal of wastes within the Buea municipality. The raison d’etre of this deliberation is to maintain environmental hygiene and promote responsible waste management throughout the municipality. The deliberation strictly prohibits the disposal of refuse in unauthorized locations.

The fines are as follows:

Individual Defaulters; 25,000Frs

Institutions: Hotels, Restaurants, Medical wastes etc. 250,000 Frs

The offender is therefore expected to pay a fine of 250,000 FCFA for violating the above-mentioned municipal deliberation.

The Lord Mayor David Mafani Namange Esq, who was present at the scene, expressed deep concern on the continuous disregard for cleanliness in certain areas of the municipality. In his own words, “We cannot tolerate behaviours which endangers public health and undermine our ongoing efforts put in place to keep Buea clean and safe,” the Mayor stated. “This enforcement is a clear message that the Council is serious about environmental protection.”

The Buea Council has also pledged to increase public awareness campaigns and surveillance to ensure that residents comply with the new waste management regulations. Citizens are also encouraged to make use of thrash cans stationed on strategic locations in the city and to follow the calendar of activities of HYSACAM to avoid penalties.

The Santa Barbara Junction episode serves as a landmark case in what the Council hopes will become a continuous process in the fight against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the Buea municipality.
