Councils in the South West Region of Cameroon, have been encouraged, to manage plastic waste. This was during a two day seminar which took place at the Chambers of the Buea Council on the 17th and 18th of July 2024.
The conference which mustered the presence of all the Mayors of the different municipalities in the South West Region, seek to enable councils be abreast with plastic related laws and policies at the national and global levels, build the capacity of Councils to enable them effectively engage in actions and response to the growing plastic crisis, increase awareness of the impact of plastic pollution while creating impactful roles by councils in managing waste, and to promote the contribution of Councils in achieving the SDGs 2030 sustainable development goals.
Madam Magdalene MBONDE Epse VEVANJE, fourth Deputy Mayor of the Buea Council representing Mayor David MAFANI NAMANGE Eqs, chaired the workshop which was convened by the Foundation for Environment and Development (FEDEV), under the auspices of H.E Mr. HELE Pierre Minister of Environment, Nature protection and Sustainable Development (MNIEPDED), in partnership with Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW), United Cities and Councils of Cameroon (UCCC) SWR, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Decentralization and Local Development (MINDEVEL).
At the end of the seminar, municipal magistrates were abreast with all laws regulating plastic waste management and various avenues of income generating mechanisms through the recycling of these same plastics.
